I started working with High Peak Arts because I am interested in the relationship between art and mental health. Art can be used as a way to communicate, to process thoughts and emotions, and to make new relationships between peers. Meeting new people results in interesting conversations, and having people trust you enough to open up is something I am grateful for. I am learning that socialising isn't as scary as I made it out to be; I am thoughtful, considerate and better at it than I originally believed. When volunteering I can take the initiative, meaning I don't have to be managed much. Being autistic means I have a unique insight into what could be useful for Neurodivergent individuals, such as suggesting and bringing fidgets for a fidget box that anyone can use. Since volunteering, I have become more confident; when I first started I didn't talk to anyone and now you can't get me to shut up! Community arts was something I considering pursuing, but now its becoming something I would love to do!
